How GPA is calculated
GPA = (sum of grade points × credit hours) ÷ total credit hours. Each letter grade maps to a point value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.) and is weighted by the credit hours of that course. A 4-credit A contributes more to your GPA than a 1-credit A.
4.0 vs 5.0 scale
The standard US scale goes to 4.0 for an A. Some schools use a 5.0 weighted scale where AP/IB/honours courses earn an extra point (A = 5.0 instead of 4.0). Pick whichever scale your school uses.
Please note: Grading scales, letter-grade point values and rounding rules vary between institutions — some schools use +/− grades (A− = 3.7), different weighting for honours courses, or percentage-based systems. The ToolCrix GPA calculator uses the common US mappings, so treat its result as an estimate and verify your official GPA with your school's registrar or academic office, especially for applications, scholarships and eligibility decisions.
Frequently asked questions
How is a weighted GPA different? A weighted GPA gives extra points for advanced courses (AP, IB, honours) — switch the ToolCrix GPA calculator to the 5.0 scale to model it.
Can I calculate a cumulative GPA? Yes — add all courses across semesters with their credit hours and the ToolCrix calculator weights each grade by its credits.
Will this match my official transcript GPA? Usually close, but not guaranteed — institutions differ on +/− values and rounding, so confirm official figures with your registrar.
Is my grade data uploaded? No — the ToolCrix GPA calculator runs entirely in your browser; courses, grades and credits are never sent to a server.
