Need to calculate your GPA — for a semester, a year, or your entire degree — and understand how it's weighted? This guide shows you how to use a free GPA calculator that works in your browser, with no sign-up and no upload.
How GPA is calculated
GPA = (sum of grade points × credit hours) ÷ total credit hours. Each letter grade is converted to a point value (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, etc.) and weighted by how many credits that course is worth. A 4-credit A contributes more to your GPA than a 1-credit A.
How to calculate your GPA (step by step)
- Open the GPA Calculator.
- Choose the 4.0 (standard) or 5.0 (weighted) grading scale.
- Add each course: name, letter grade and credit hours.
- Add or remove rows as needed for the number of courses.
- Your GPA updates live as you enter each grade.
- Scroll to see the breakdown of total grade points, total credits, and your final GPA.
4.0 vs 5.0 weighted scale
The standard US GPA scale tops out at 4.0 (A). Some high schools use a 5.0 weighted scale where advanced courses (AP, IB, Honours) earn extra points — an A in an AP class = 5.0 instead of 4.0. Always check which scale your school uses.
Common grading scales
- A = 4.0 (A− = 3.7)
- B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0 (B− = 2.7)
- C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0 (C− = 1.7)
- D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0
- F = 0.0
